You must have heard about the famous chicken katsu that strong belief comes from Japan. But, don’t be confused with chicken katsu or Tonkatsu. Chicken Katsu and tonkatsu are almost the same. It is a just different on its main ingredient but both of the recipe using almost the same technic, deep frying and covered with panko flour or dried breadcrumbs.

Simple Tonkatsu – Donkaseu Recipe

Tonkatsu – Donkkaseu is a deep-fried pork covered by dry breadcrumb or panko flour. People in Japan prefer to call this dish Tonkatsu. Meanwhile, citizens in Korea prefer to call this dish Donkaseu. Usually, Tonkatsu – Donkkaseu is served with thinly sliced cabbage, sauce, eaten with rice. Is your mouth watering now? So let’s just check the to the recipe.


  • Five pork chops or beef, flatten with hammer
  • 1 tbsp ginger powder of grated ginger
  • One tsp of salt
  • ½ tsp of ground pepper
  • Two beaten eggs or 1 if the eggs are big
  • 4 tbsp of all-purpose flour, wheat flour is preferable
  • 1 cup of panko flour or dry bread crumbs
  • 3 cups of oil for deep frying
  • ½ part of cabbage, thinly sliced.
  • One lemon cut into wedges, for garnish
  • Five thin cucumbers sliced


1Prepared the pork chop, remove the excess fat if desired, then flatten it with a hammer. Season the pork chop with sprinkles of salt and pepper. And rub the pork chop with ginger and grated garlic. Let the pork chop to rest for 10 minutes or less in a fridge.

2Add the wheat flour and breadcrumbs in the separate bowl, and also add the beaten eggs in another bowl. Take out the pork chop. The first thing first is to dip the pork chop in wheat flour, then dip it in the beaten eggs, then dip in breadcrumbs or panko flour. Repeat the dipping process in between dipping into eggs and panko or breadcrumbs.

3Prepare the deep fry pan. Add about 3 cups of oil into the deep fry pan. Set it over a high heat for 5 minutes or until it started to get smoky. Then put the pork chop into the deep fry pan until it is cooked or until the breadcrumbs started to turn golden brown.

4Move the tonkatsu – donkkaseu over a tissue in a plate, let it drain from the oil. Then served the Tonkatsu and donkkseu with cabbage, lemon wedges, and cucumber and hot or warm rice together on a plate or in a bowl, you can serve the Tonkatsu and Donkkaseu with your favorite sauce or curry gravy.
