Among all Japanese dishes, chicken katsu is probably the most popular for global citizen. It uses protein most people are familiar with. People also have no difficulty to accept the taste. Usually a plate of chicken katsu is accompanied with special sweet sauce.
How to Make Chicken Katsu
Aside from seasoning and frying, there is no other step to do. If you want to elevate the taste, then pick fresh ingredients such as chicken meat, fresh flour, eggs and other ingredients. It is also important to set the heat right.
- 4 pieces (approx. 8 ounces) of chicken breast; skinless, boneless and pounded into ½ inches thickness
- 2 tablespoons of all-purpose flour
- 1 cup of panko bread crumb
- 1 beaten egg
- 1 cup of vegetable oil for frying
- Cabbage, julienned
- Fresh tomato, sliced
- Tonkatsu sauce (commercial brand)
1Take the chicken meat then put it on cutting board. Sprinkle some salt and pepper on both sides. Massage the chicken meat so spices will be absorbed better. Repeat the process to all remaining chicken breasts.
2Bring three different shallow bowls. One will be used for all purpose flour, one for beaten eggs and the last one is for panko bread crumb. Take chicken meat, dip to flour and shake off excess flour. Next, dip it to egg. Make sure the chicken is completely covered with egg. Last, put it on panko crumb bowl. Again, cover both sides well.
3Turn on stove and pour vegetable oil until it covers ¼ part of skillet. Heat oil so it reaches 350 Fahrenheit. Cooking with any other temperature might make overcooked or under-cooked chicken katsu. Put coated chicken inside hot oil. Allow it to cook for 3 to 4 minutes per side. Cooked chicken katsu should have golden brown color.
4Take cooked katsu from hot oil. Allow the hot oil to drain. After it cools down a little, you can cut chicken katsu to several pieces. Put these cuts on a plate. If you want to serve it with rice, then put katsu on top of rice. Add some garnish to your taste. Don’t forget to put Tonkatsu sauce in small cup next to katsu.
