How to Make Egg-In-A-Hole French Toast

As long as you know how to mix batter and fry an egg, you are good to go. The tricks to get delicious French toast are ingredients and timed cooking. It is not hard to learn both requirements. Moreover, slight errors will not ruin the entire dish.

Ingredients:

  • 4 slices of stale bread
  • 4 tablespoon of butter, divided by 4
  • 8 large eggs
  • ½ cup of milk
  • Kosher salt
  • Black pepper to taste, freshly grounded
  • 1 cup of shredded white cheddar
  • 1 tablespoon of finely chopped chives

Directions:

1Take one slice of stale bread and put it on a cutting board. Then, make a circle cut in the middle by using biscuit cutter or glass cup. Apply slightly more pressure to get clean cut. Keep the cut bread to be toasted. It could be served as dipper. Repeat this process to the remaining bread.

2Take medium bowl and whisk four eggs and milk. Keep whisking until both ingredients are mixed well. Add seasonings like salt and pepper. Last, add cheese. Dip bread into this mixture and tap to remove excessive coating.

3Heat non-stick pan on medium heat. Throw in two tablespoon of butter. Let it melt. Put dipped bread on hot pan with melted butter. One non-stick pan usually only fits for one bread only. After two minutes, bread should change color to golden brown. Flip it and crack an egg to fill the hole. Sprinkle some salt and pepper on newly added egg.

4Allow egg to be cooked. For medium cooked egg, it takes about 4 minutes. Be careful when cooking longer; bread might be burnt. To prevent this, turn heat to low setting. Repeat this process with the remaining bread.

5Remove pan from heat. Bring over new plate and put cooked French toast on top of it. One plate should have one toast only. For big portion, put two of them. Sprinkle chives on top of toast. Serve it warm.
